Leaving intensive care is an important milestone in a patient’s ongoing recovery but it can also be quite a worrying time for families and patients alike. Leaving behind the continuous monitoring and one-to-one nursing care can make people feel quite vulnerable.

The Critical Care Rehabilitation team is a service dedicated to assiting patients discharged from ICU with their ongoing recovery. The team visits patients on the general ward. Patients recovering from a critical illness frequently need assistance with washing and dressing, have problems with their mobility and often want to talk to someone about what has happened. The team’s aim is to promote independence and so as the patient improves they will be encouraged to do things more independently, which can often be very tiring. Setting small realistic goals on a daily basis can really help patients progress.

The rehabilitation team supports patients and their families throughout this recovery phase until they leave hospital.
