Leaving ICU is the first step in what will be a long recovery. Some patients find the transition to a ward difficult as they are surprised how weak they feel. This is normal and caused by the time spent lying in bed. Muscles waste very quickly when you are not using them, especially when you are ill. It is important that patients take things slowly. Your relative will probably need help to get out of bed and do not be surprised if they tire very quickly, even sitting in a chair. It is important that patients try to start moving a little to build up their strength.

Although many patients do not remember any of their ICU stay, some do recall quite vivid dreams or hallucinations. These can be very real to patients and it is difficult to separate them from facts or actual events. Patients will need reassurance and reminding of where they are and what has happened to them. It is not uncommon to have had some frightening or unpleasant thoughts; these will fade with time, but if they are very troublesome please let a member of staff know as ICU run a follow up service.
