A patient’s vital signs are continuously monitored in the intensive care unit. Their pulse rate, heart electrical tracing, oxygen levels, blood pressure and breathing rate are usually displayed on a screen at the bedside. This continuous monitoring allow the clinical team to constantly adjust the patient’s organ support therapies in order to keep their vital signs within an acceptable range. Audible and visual alarms alert staff to changes in a patient’s condition.
The monitor on the left is awaiting connection to a patient.
