Low blood pressure can have many causes but one of the commonest is infection and ‘septic shock’. If a patient’s blood pressure does not improve with simple measures they may need to come to intensive care for blood pressure support therapies. This consists of a constant infusion of one or more drugs into the circulation usually via a central line. The patient’s blood pressure is supported whilst the underlying infection or other cause is treated.
Side effects depend on the specific drugs used but can include poor circulation in the hands and feet.
