Rationale for intensive care

Intensive care supports failing organ systems whilst a patient’s underlying illness is diagnosed and treated. Although intensive care can ‘buy time’, a patient’s recovery usually depends on the successful treatment of their underlying illness or injury. Organ support by itself rarely saves lives. With this in mind – and because of the invasive nature of intensive care therapies – ICU is usually only helpful when the patient has a potentially reversible condition.
